The right way.... a guide to taking care of your extensions

August 1, 2016

Your hair extensions, like your own hair, need a lot of care and attention. The care you give your extensions will have a direct affect on the condition of your own hair, the extension hair and how long the extensions will last.

Remember: Always contact your extension technician for any questions about your hair extensions. It is part of our service!

Washing:

  1. Detangle (brush) before shampooing.

  2. Do not tip your head forward by washing your hair forward in a basin or wrapping the towel around after washing. You will do damage to your own hair! Wash hair with your head tilt backwards in a bath or preferably in the shower.

  3. You can use any shampoo and conditioner, but a good quality product is always preferred! Avoid 2-in-1 products.

  4. Be very gentle while shampooing and towel drying. Squeeze the shampoo through the hair instead of rubbing. Hair should be shampooed and conditioned regularly. The extensions do not receive natural scalp oils and need to be conditioned regularly.

  5. Try not to apply conditioner to the roots or directly on the area of attachment. If you do suffer from a dry scalp, you can apply conditioner on your roots, but be sure to rinse it out properly every time!

Sleeping:

  1. Do not sleep with wet hair. Hair should be dried thoroughly.

  2. Tie up in a pony tail or braid it when sleeping.

Styling:

  1. No high ponytails or tight up-styles for at least the first two to three weeks (after installation).

  2. Always dry hair, especially the roots! If you are leaving it to dry naturally, do not tie your hair up while it’s wet!

  3. Avoid using any hot appliances such as curling irons and flat irons directly at the point of attachment.

  4. Brush hair at least twice daily using a special soft bristle brush. Remember that your own natural hair loss, if not brushed out daily, can cause serious knots and mats. Separate the extensions/knotting with your fingers.

  5. Avoid using products with wax, alcohol, silicone or sulphur directly on the point of attachment.

  6. Use a spray-on conditioner between shampoos. This works especially well with curly hair to control the frizz!

Colour, perms and chemical straighteners:

  1. You can colour over your extensions with great success, but always consult with your extensionist first.

  2. DO NOT BLEACH, HIGH LIFT or LIGHTEN your extensions without checking with your technician first.

  3. Extensions can be permed, but never perm or chemically straighten your hair while the extensions are in your own hair.

Lifestyle & Swimming:

  1. Wash and condition your hair immediately after going swimming/Jacuzzi/ diving/snorkelling. Do not allow any chemicals (not even sea-salts) to remain in your hair for a long period.

  2. If you regularly use a tanning bed, cover hair with a towel while tanning.

  3. Make a practice of rinsing and conditioning after exercising.

Removing the extensions:

  1. Do not attempt to remove your own hair extensions. This must only be done by a Make-Over Addiction extension technician to prevent any damage to your natural hair.

Remember, if you have any questions and/or comments, our door is always open!

In conclusion we want to thank you for your support and wish you many “good hair days” from all at Make-Over Addiction.
